1179 og   image"Feuchtwanger" 9¢ Encased Postage Fantasy, three 3¢ 1861s overlapped under clear mica in a rectangular case, the reverse embossed with a floral pattern and a central Eagle & Snake motif; slightly cracked mica, the reverse exceptionally clean, Fine to Very Fine, with 1989 P.F. certificate.


The origin of these fantasies is unknown. They have acquired the name Feuchtwanger due to the simlarity of their Eagle and Snake design to that used by Lewis Feuchtwanger for the obverse of his proposed "Hard Times" Cents in 1837. As far as is known, they have nothing to do with Feuchtwanger, nor with Gault or Scovill. (Image)
