A REASONABLY ATTRACTIVE, COMPLETELY SOUND EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF U.S. PHILATELY.

In 1911, Bell Pharmaceutical Co. in Orangeburg, N.Y. placed a small order for the new 3¢ coil stamps to use for mailing some physician's samples. These stamps were considered inferior by collectors at the time because they had not just one, but two straight edges, most were rather poorly centered, and, since they were commercially used on thicker envelopes containing samples, many of the used stamps ended up with creases and tears. The importance of these experimental stamps wasn't realized until much later.
