Pettigrew, Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond, Va."; the second use was canceled Apr 16 in Richmond and sent to William S. Pettigrew in Summerville, N.C.; right side flap replaced, slight damp staining, Fine.


Chimborazo was the largest military hospital in human history—either ancient or modern. Mary Blount Pettigrew was the sister of Brig. General James Johnson Pettigrew. In March 1864 she became a Matron at the Chimborazo Military hospital and was the chief of the hospital's Virginia division.

Anderson, who used both sides to write a letter to his wife and family, in part, "We are a little fearful of being sent to the west yet this fall, some think our corps will be sent if any are sent."; slightly reduced with multiple splits along folds, but a most unusual example of the severity of the paper shortage.
