572 cover   imageThe "Immortal 600", Prisoner-of-War Covers, pair of covers from Lt. David Erwin Gordon to his wife in Gordiers Depot, North Eastern Railroad, S.C.; the first from Fort Delaware with U.S. 3¢ canceled at Delaware City, Aug 8 (1864) and an oval "Prisoner's Letter/Examined (unsigned)/Fort Delaware" (C.S.A. PWH-01) plus a 10¢ type I (Archer & Daly) canceled Richmond on Aug 26; the second from Fort Pulaski near Savannah, Ga. with another 10¢ type I (Archer & Daly) tied by a Nov 5 "Savannah Ga./Paid" c.d.s.; a Very Fine and exceedingly rare matched pair; the cover from Fort Pulaski is one of the two earliest recorded, signed P. Kaufmann.

In October of 1864, Union troops at Fort Pulaski accepted transfer of 600 imprisoned Confederate officers who would later be known as "The Immortal Six Hundred".

The officers' plight began when news reached U.S. Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton, that Confederate Major General Samuel Jones, in order to protect the city of Charleston from Union artillery bombardment, ordered 600 imprisoned Union officers to be moved into the city and placed in direct line of fire from said artillery. In response, Stanton ordered that 600 imprisoned Confederate officers be positioned on open stockade Morris Island in Charleston harbor, within direct line of fire from Confederate guns at Fort Sumter.

The standoff continued until a yellow fever epidemic forced Jones to remove the prisoners from the Charleston city limits with the result that Stanton had the Confederate prisoners moved from Morris Island to Fort Pulaski.

Agent of Exchange" (crossed out at the lower left) through the lines; a civilian flag-of-truce use via Old Point Comfort, Va., with this being the inner cover that was placed in the regular mail; 10¢ type II (Archer & Daly) being tied by a Richmond c.d.s., Oct 14 (1864); the cover docketed Nov 1; included is the original letter, datelined St. Louis, Sept 24th, from Miller's father offering mainly family news, but also inquiring about his son's artificial leg that had been necessitated after being wounded, captured, and imprisoned.

575 cover   imageFlag of Truce - Returned to Sender, 10¢ type II (Keatinge & Ball), tied by a blue Petersburg, Va. c.d.s. on a cover to Utica, Wis.; the address was crossed out and the cover, which contains a six-page letter, was returned to the sender in Manassas, Ga. for the following reason (in manuscript on the reverse): "Letters of more than a page are not allowed to go North by Flag of Truce. (signed) R D Rambaut, Flag Truce Officer". Cover with a slightly rounded upper left corner, Fine.

The original, very articulate letter is included - along with a complete transcription - a marvelous missive, written by a well-traveled school teacher, in which he addresses such matters as mail and war, and even tells of a family of seven free negroes "who sold themselves into voluntary bondage, for the sum of $100 dollars each!"

Civilian Flag of Truce mail was banned by the U.S. Secretary of War in 1862. However, on rare occasions, military officials allowed it to go through.

576 cover   imageFlag of Truce Mail - Mourning Cover, small mourning cover, from Richmond, Va. to Columbus, Ga. franked with a slightly faulty 10¢ type II (Keatinge & Ball) tied by a Richmond. c.d.s., Mar 15 (1865), and by a partial Macon, Ga. c.d.s.; faint manuscript endorsement "Flag of Truce", Fine.

Less than a month before war's end, much of Georgia was already in the hands of Union forces (though Columbus, as yet, was not). Nevertheless, the Confederate Postal Service, carrying the cover into that state, prevailed upon local authorities in Union-occupied Macon to send it through the lines, thus completing its "Flag of Truce" mercy mission to Columbus.

577 cover   imageFlag of Truce Mail - New Union State of West Virginia, four-margin 10¢ type I (Archer & Daly) tied by a Harrisonburg, Va. c.d.s., Jul 22 (1863], on a small cover to the town of Union in "Monroe County, Va.," which, as of June 20, was actually in the new Union State of West Virginia. The cover passed easily to Union, West Va., because Confederate troops were still in control of that area—although regulations of both the U.S. and the C.S.A. required that such mail should pass through a "Flag of Truce" point—the nearest flag of truce official was in Charlestown, 230 miles away; small stain at the lower right, otherwise Very Fine. The 1864 C.S.A. political drawing of Lincoln hanging in effigy was especially popular with Southerners during the losing Shenandoah Campaign of that year. The sender of this cover, residing in New Market, the valley town that had been site of a battle earlier that year, felt compelled to contribute his version of the event.
