4043 cover   image1848, Missionary Letter, Ephraim W. Clark, folded letter datelined Honolulu, Dec 26, 1848; 3½ pages to his sister in Greensborough, Vt. after having recently becoming pastor of the Kawaiaha‘o Church in Honolulu. Clark tells of family and local goings on, praising the elegance of his new church, and noting that the local population was currently suffering the ravages of outbreaks of whooping cough and measles, theorizing that, "probably one in fifteen have died". The folds of the letter include a few paragraphs from Clark's wife, Mary, mainly about family life.

The address leaf bears a partial red New Bedford, Mass. c.d.s. with a matching "SHIP" and manuscript "7"; few small holes, and tape repairs, none really affecting the text, Fine. Includes a full transcription.


Ephraim Weston Clark (1799-1878), was in the missionary service in Hawaii from 1828 until 1864. He is best known for his major role in translating the Bible into the Hawaiian language.

4044 cover   image1849, Missionary Letter, Ephraim W. Clark, folded letter datelined Honolulu, Oct 25, 1849; three pages to his brother and sister-in-law in Peacham, Vt. Clark relates family and gives interesting commentary on the rapid growth of Hawaii as a result of the California Gold Rush and "gold fever". He notes that, "Four parcels of gold dust (about 40 dollars) was brought to me.as an offering."

The address leaf bears a red Apr 6 "BOSTON/5 cts" c.d.s.; very well preserved with only very minor splitts at the junctions of a few folds, Fine to Very Fine. Includes a full transcription.
