Yemen, 1926, 5b black on white laid (Scott 3), without gum as issued; the vertically laid sheet has a tear in the left margin, barely touching the stamp in position 11, and some light creases in the top margin; the horizontally laid sheet is pristine, Very Fine. A rare pair of sheets—the vertically laid variety is said to be the scarcer of the two.

Used in the Kawkaban district, Mahawet governate, north of Sana'a, where a battalion of Osman troops were stationed in a mountain-top fort to defend the commercial roads to Istanbul.
