1847, 5¢ brown (Scott 1), desirable four margin example of the desirable brown shade, neatly tied on 1850 cover to Stratford, Conn. by pretty blue grid cancellation with matching adjacent "Cambridge, Ms., Mar 6" c.d.s.; accompanying certificate of authenticity declines opinion as to the "Longfellow" signature at right; a fascinating and visually stunning cover with wonderful attributes, Very Fine, with 1975 P.F. certificate.

1847, 5¢ red brown (Scott 1), single, ample to large margins except into at top, neat manuscript "X" cancel, not tied, on 1849 folded letter dateline Clarksville, TN and addressed to Lebanon Tennessee, extremely light strike of blue Clarksville Tenn date stamp at upper left; owner notes this folded letter, which is signed by Johnson, is the only example of the former postmaster general using one of the stamps that was introduced during his administration; file fold through date stamp otherwise, Fine and attractive, less than 15 covers with a single 5¢ 1847 from Tennessee are recorded in the U. S. Classics Society Census of 1847 covers.

1847, 5¢ orange brown (Scott 1b), small recorded "R", on 1850 folded letter, stamp with large to ample margins all around and a strong, clear impression, tied by red grid and blue Apr 27 Baltimore c.d.s., the rare small blue "R" is also well struck and was a precursor to registered mail, struck upon receipt, the letter enclosed sight notes from the Mercantile Bank of Baltimore to the cashier at the Bank of the United States in Philadelphia, of exhibition quality, Very Fine, an extremely rare marking.
