AN EXTRAORDINARY EXAMPLE OF THIS CLASSIC AIRPOST RARITY.

In 1927, Carling Breweries offered a $25,000 prize to the first Canadian or British pilot to fly from London, Ontario to London, England. Postal Authorities approved the printing of a special label for mail that to be carried on the flight. 100 labels were printed, with 87 of those being affixed to envelopes.

The first attempt was made on August 29 of that year by pilot Terrance Tully and navigator James Medcalf in a Stinson SM-1, christened the "Sir John Carling". However, due to heavy fog and clouds the flight was aborted. Two days later, on September 1, another attempt was made, but again was forced down by weather conditions near Caribou, Me. After waiting for clear weather, the plane arrived at Harbour Grace, Nfld. And on Wednesday, September 7, Tully and Medcalf took off for Croydon Airport, London. Unfortunately, though weather conditions were described as favorable, the "Sir John Carling" disappeared somewhere over the Atlantic and was never seen again; no wreckage was ever found and, of course, no covers survived. Nevertheless, one cover is recorded, presumably having been taken off the flight after the first attempt on August 29.

Only nine of the original 13 unused stamps have been recorded, two of those being in collections of the British Library. Of the remaining seven, most are faulty.
