Collections
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
340 /o   Paraguay, The Magnificent Dr. Kurt Benirschke Collection. The extraordinary, comprehensive collection keenly assembled in 20 supremely well annotated albums from the first issue, nearly to date. After considerable thought, and aside from 2 exhibition quality single lots and a handful of covers, we decided it best to offer this collection intact, as the depth of coverage in this collection is not likely to be seen again anytime soon. Within this labor of love, you will find virtually every issued stamp, in addition to proofs and essays, hundreds of varieties, both listed and unlisted, many of which belie their meager catalog valuations. Due to the nature of his professional work, Dr. Benirschke traveled to Paraguay on many occasions, always finding time to spend with the local dealers and collectors there, often acquiring many difficult pieces from these sources. The collection begins with the rare first issue essays, 6 examples in various colors or shades, and continues on with duplicated, mint or used first issues with several identified forgeries, excellent blue or black 1878 surcharges, including Scott 4-5 used, 5F-5H mint, 6 used, 7 used, a surcharge proof block of 4 for 4-6 etc. From the 1879 issue onwards, the coverage is simply astounding, with specialty pieces (i.e. #19 block of 4, signed Knietschel), identified reprints, scores of varieties, such as overprint errors including double and inverted types, part-perfs and imperfs, scarce trial color proofs, specimens, paper types, bisects, fantails, unissued values, bogus issue stamps, inverted centers, missing overprints, etc. Coverages extends for regular issues, incredible airmails like C80a, many rare imperfs, plus officials, with many Waterlow specimens, missing colors etc., also noted. The post-1960 era through the modern is comprehensive in nature, including unlisted sets and souvenir sheets, specimens and varieties, plus telegraphs, dues, etc. To page through this extraordinary collection will appeal to both the novice or expert, and its safe to say is quite incomparable is scope. Fresh and routinely Fine to Very Fine or better, a keepsake collection to be relished, inspection invited.
