275 cover Cairo Military Prison imageMilitary Prison - Cairo, Ill., Small, pink-lined lady's envelope without postal markings, which would have been enclosed in a larger cover - addressed to J.W. Hughes, Military Prison, Cairo, Ill., "To care of Provost Marshall", Very Fine. One of only three recorded Cairo Military Prison P.O.W. covers.


Hughes was captured Jan 19, 1862 at Mill Springs, Ky. He was first sent to Camp Chase, then, on April 17th, transferred to Johnson's Island. He was then sent back to Camp Chase on May 24th. Finally, on August 25th, he was started to Vicksburg for exchange, stopping briefly at Cairo on the way.

Infantry], a P.O.W. on Hart's Island; franked with a somewhat damaged 3¢ rose tied by a Nashville, Tenn. target duplex, Apr 25 (1865), Fine. One of only 22 recorded Hart's Island Prison covers—the prison was in operation for only four months.


Morey's mother enclosed a clipping from a N.Y. paper that makes conditions for prisoners on the island sound almost idyllic, in part, "The rations received by the rebels is about the same as furnished our own soldiers, and consists of fresh beef boiled, bread and soup. The principal pastime. consists of whittling out gutta percha rings inlaying them with silver, making fans and screens, all of which they sell for sufficient money to procure tobacco and other luxuries."

Included is the original letter datelined Walden, Mass., June 9, 1865, from Morey's mother who relays the good news that she has just received the official form for the release of prisoners of war. Then she passes along the bad news that she had had her purse snatched as she was boarding the train in Boston. In it was "$30.00 and a business paper worth six hundred." She thinks she "can prevent the rogue using the paper, and perhaps catch him by the same attempt."

Also included is a small newspaper clipping noting that "The Commissary General of Prisoners is overwhelmed with applications for the discharge of rebel prisoners of war upon taking the oath"

Cav." with an inconspicuous Annapolis c.d.s., Oct. 18 (1864) and handstamped "Due 3"; slight damp stain at the upper left, affecting the certifying signature a bit, 1" closed tear at the bottom, Fine.


In the letter, datelined Camp Parole, Oct 17, 1864, Knight writes, in part, "We were confined in Fayette jail something over a week. We were escorted to the railroad by a company of Cavalry. The distance we marched was 115 miles."

Feb. 13" (1865); the letter is from Mrs. E.D. Yutzy, wife of the Dist. of Virginia Provost Marshal, seeking news of her brother, Blair F. Scott; a bit soiled, letter with some reinforced splitting, Fine.


The letter reads, in part, "The Rebs fell upon them and gobbled them up - a few escaped to tell who were captured" and a "report first said he was taken to Libby - next to Andersonville…."

Typical of problems with parolees, Simpson had just returned from desertion. In his marvelous four-page letter to a friend in Philadelphia, datelined Camp Parole, May 12, 1864, he writes that he is being exchanged and hopes to "take a hand at capturing Richmond" and opines that "it will take a seig [sic] of several months".

The earliest of the three recorded from here.


Hobart was captured Sep 15 at Harpers Ferry. He was paroled in the field and sent to Camp Douglas.
