813 cover C1 imageAirmail, 1918, 6¢ orange (Scott C1), tied by purple "Air Mail Service Wash. N.Y. Phila. Washington Dec. 16, 1918" duplex cancel on first day of new 6c Rate to New York City, with signature of Capt. B.B. Lipsner, the head of the airmail service from its inception, who resigned ten days earlier over disagreements on whether or not new planes were needed (Lipsner said army planes are adequate (per front page headline of Dec. 7, 1918 NY Times)), so it seems doubtful he would have signed this (which is why the APS declined opinion on the authenticity of the signature, but the APS is not currently and never was an authority on autographs), anyway, the cover is Very Fine and scarce, with description from previous James McCusker auction., with 1997 A.P.E.X. certificate.

Jul. 15, 1918" duplex cancel on first day of new 16c Rate, the cover from New York City has the cancel in purple and is addressed to famed airmail collector Percy McG Mann care of a friend in Washington D.C. and has an interesting "Send a Letter by Airplane, Especially to one 'over there', it will be a real treat" slogan handstamp on reverse, the cover from Philadelphia has the cancel in black and has a straightline purple Fee Claimed handstamp and a registry number handstamp and is addressed to a Nassau Street stamp dealer and has both a purple three line handstamp and New York City same day receiving backstamps, and the cover from Washington D.C. has the cancel in purple, and was forwarded to Hot Springs Va. and has a three line fee claimed handstamp with the original handwritten note from Joseph B. Leavy"Dear Mr. Shuling, The new green aero mail by first delivery, with best wishes! Yours truly Joseph B. Leavy", Very Fine trio of covers, Philadelphia cover with description from previous James McCusker auction.
