862   image"Scallop Shell" Fancy Cancels on 19th Century Classic Covers, 3 stampless plus 18 stamped, 2 postal cards and 2 entires, the stampless are boldly struck New York City Clamshell cancels including black on 1803 folded letter to the Comptroller of the State of NY and red on 1804 folded letter written by former New Jersey Senator John Rutherfurd (served 1791-1798) asking the recipient to send a bill for the amounts owed by the sender's very recently deceased father (Walter Rutherfurd who died January 10 1804; both men have their own Wikipedia pages), a folded cover with a fancy "Ship 6" in circle (used in San Francisco 1850-1860) docketed as being from Russsel Sturgis (1805-1877) who according to his Wikipedia page, moved with his family to China in 1851 so this folded cover was most likely mailed from China, the rest are 1861-1890 from a variety of towns -- Skinner Eno notes six "shell" and "scallop" cancels -- Brooklyn CT (PA-S-1), Cuba NY (PA-S-2), PA-S-3, Stamford CT (PA-S-4), Brooklyn CT (GE-M 16-1 (possibly recarved from PA-S 1), and PA-S 6 - and this lot contains 3 cancels that are unlisted in Skinner-Eno, Very Fine strikes, see the entire lot online.
