NEW SOUTH WALES continued...

Essays & Proofs continued...
LotNo. Symbol Lot Description Estimate in AU$'s
161 P imageDIADEMS - REPRINTED DIE PROOFS: 1872 South Kensington Exhibition die proofs taken from the original dies comprising 1d in black (on India paper), 1d in carmine-lake, 2d in bright blue and 3d in yellow-green, all with large margins on thin wove paper; and Large Diadems 5d in violet, 6d in red-brown and 1/- in carmine, all with margins just clear - at the sides - to large on thin wove paper. A very colourful and delightful set. Ex Guy Hutson: sold for £4560. The 'Carrington' set (excluding the 1d in black), all on larger pieces of "thick card", sold after the auction for $13,980. It was stated there that "...three sets of proofs were pulled...a second set is in the British Library", and this appears to be the third, surprisingly on completely different stock. Note also, that Lot 149 includes another example of the 5d in violet, which suggests that there was at least one other set produced.

162 P imageDIADEMS - COLOUR TRIALS WITH WAXED CORNERS: Selection of the smaller design in blue (plate damage at upper-right), red shades x4, dull purple, dull red-violet & yellow-olive, mostly on vertically-laid paper, all with the margins, lower tablet & the waxed corner more-or-less removed, condition variable. This is the format of most surviving examples. (8) NSW is the only colony for which Perkins Bacon produced dies and plates but did not print any stamps, all of which were printed in Sydney, as were most of the plate proofs and colour trials. The lots in this section, although inscribed 'NEW SOUTH WALES' were actually created by Perkins Bacon for two purposes 1) as colour trials for other colonies; or 2) for cancellation-removal trials. They therefore have great significance beyond NSW & other Australian Colonies. To produce these proofs, Perkins Bacon created small plates of 6 (2x3) for the smaller design, using an intermediate die with blank tablets, and of 4 (2x2) for the larger design, using the 6d die. All the smaller proofs had a waxed (void) corner at lower-left, while the four 6d proofs had a different corner waxed. See 'Perkins Bacon Records' by Percy de Worms (1953) Volume I page 100.
