Recorded for three years only. Renamed from Walhall TO as a PO 1.1.1904; closed 31.7.1938. [Seriously remote: 227km ENE of Port Hedland & 300km S of Broome. 1224 c image1854 (Jan 27) outer from England to "WA Sanford/Colonial Secretary/Perth/Western Australia" endorsed "Via Marseilles, Via Ceylon or Singapore, Immediate" with 'St James St' London local post handstamp in blue, all but the last endorsement crossed out & rated "1/-" packet letter with London 'PAID' cds on the face, on arrival rated "4" in red pencil for the inwards ship letter rate, minor folds & blemishes. The letter was 3 weeks too late for the previous P&O sailing via Galle - even forwarding via Marseilles would not catch that ship - and the next was not due to leave for another 6 weeks. Carried on the next available ship being the General Screw Steam Shipping Co 'Bosphorus' to Adelaide where mail for Western Australia was off-loaded and forwarded by coastal ship (as there was no stop at Albany).

Per P&O contract steamer 'Indus' to Alexandria, overland then 'Bengal' from Suez to Galle, 'Pottinger' to Singapore and 'Madras' arriving at Albany on 5.1.1855. From 1.10.1854 the British Empire 6d per ½oz ship letter rate applied to both contract and private ship letters - with no inland delivery charges to be paid - but this was not extended to Western Australia until 1.6.1856. Ex Cecil Walkley. John Bateman was later president of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce 1895-1900 as well as being instrumental in establishing the Australian Shipping Association in 1884 and building the Geraldton to Roebourne telegraph line in 1885.

Lahore is the capital of the Punjab in the north-east of present-day Pakistan. Camels were the preferred beasts of burden on the Goldfields, and this was almost definitely sent by an 'Afghan' camel driver.
