1061 F image1896-99 V/Crown (W82) Watermark ½d emerald with the Watermark Upright (Inverted) SG 331a, light Melbourne 'NO15/99' cds cancel, undercatalogued at £100. Geoff Kellow states at page 267 that these were printed "with watermark sideways to right" and makes no mention of any varieties. At page 21, he states "The sheet of paper being nearly square, the possibility ... arose of sideways feeding, and so abnormal sideways watermarks, usually very scarce, occasionally occur". [Because the ½d was printed 'sideways', an upright (or inverted) watermark is abnormal for this value]. See also Lot 1064 for a Gibbons-listed ½d with upright watermark.

1065 nh image1899 Cancellation Trials comprising ½d blue-green & 2d violet SG 356 & 359 plus six other colours of the ½d and the 2d in blue-green & in deep carmine, all in blocks of 4 with each row crossed by three parallel lines ruled in different colours of writing-ink, some with minor stains from largely unsuccessful ink-removal experiments & the 2d violet with significant stains, three marginal blocks have light notations in the margins referring to chemicals used in the removal experiments, full unmounted original gum. Unissued. The fraudulent re-use of stamps from which pen-cancels had been removed was the impetus for these Special Printings. Only twelve sheets of  60, in different colours were printed. It was only in 1990, that the remainders were discovered, & no more have appeared since. With a copy of Richard Breckon's article from 'The Australian Philatelist' (Spring 1989).  (10 blocks)

Geoff Kellow states at page 295 that Die III printings "were made in late April-July 1905 from Plates 13-16 ... Victoria's £1 & £2 were the only adhesive stamps from any State bearing the portrait of Edward VII. There were higher-value Postal Fiscals, but this £2 is the only postage stamp of that denomination and therefore the highest face-value postage stamp of the six States.

The original Perf 12½ row at top was misplaced and was corrected with a Perf 11 row immediately below. The ACSC states that this variety "affected the top rows of at least two sheets. The recorded examples comprise the top row of an upper left corner block of 8 [with the Perf 11 row above the Perf 12½ row], the upper stamp in a vertical pair [this item, with the Perf 11 row below the Perf 12½ row] and a single [perf positions unknown]".
