LotNo. Symbol Lot Description Estimate in AU$'s
921 G imagePerkins Bacon Printings 6d blue as SG 73 but Perf 12 on three sides & Imperf at the Base well clear of the design, untidy but light cancel. Unlisted by Gibbons and believed to be the only recorded example. Ex Rodney Perry; Guido Craveri; Les Molnar (sold at our auction of 29.6.2012 for $1980); and 'Dubois' (I): sold for SFr732. Illustrated at page 104 by Geoff Kellow who states: "Examples have been reported Perf 12 and Perf 12xRouletted." He also states that "Their status is uncertain, and these may be bogus". However, the issued stamp was rouletted and there is no evidence of rouletting on this example. In addition, the perfs match other Perf 12 stamps from the SG 74 to 82 issue. Our conclusion is that, as with other contemporary issues, imperforate remainders of the Queen-on-Throne 6d - perhaps only one sheet - were perforated by Robinson in early-1859. It should be listed by Gibbons between SG 80 & 81.

922 G imagePerkins Bacon Printings 6d bright blue as SG 73 but Imperforate with large even margins, light but indistinct Barred Numeral cancel, tiny nick in the top margin only does not detract. A great rarity. Geoff Kellow refers at page 103 only to the release in England in the late-19th century of imperforate remainders of the 1d & 6d. Of the latter he states "because the whole stock of 6d's received in Victoria were rouletted prior to issue ... [these] represent an imperforate variety. Five copies only are known - two pairs (one in the Tapling Collection ...) and a single in the Royal Collection". Although not explicitly stated, these are presumably all unused, as was the example sold at our auction of 1.3.2020 for $3540. [The illustration is above Lot 921] It is highly improbable that the London remainders are the source of this example. Our conclusion is that this stamp is from a locally issued part-imperf or wholly imperf sheet. Accordingly, this item is the only known example of an imperforate 6d issued and used in Victoria. [Submitted to the RPSofV for expertising]

Geoff Kellow at page 103 states that these were printed by De La Rue for the 1872 South Kensington Exhibition and "about four copies of each are known". Sold at our auction of 31.8.2019 for $4248. 925 nh imageImperforate 1/- blue SG 25 extraordinary block of 24 Types [17-24/25-32/33-40] from the base of the sheet, huge to humungous margins except at the top where six units are just touched to shaved, Position [36] with 'VIGTORIA' Flaw, some bends & creasing including horizontally across the upper row, 10mm vertical tear into the fourth unit & a minor closed tear in the margin at right, a few small central stains, remarkably all units with full unmounted original gum, Cat £31,200++, for 24 unused singles. Only a few unused singles are known. This is the only recorded unused block and also the largest recorded multiple of this unusual Classic issue. A famous block and one of the most important items of Victorian and Australian Colonies philately: illustrated by Geoff Kellow at page 85 where he states: "Mint blocks were unknown until 1981 when the remarkable discovery occurred in Adelaide of a block of 24". RPSofL Certificate (2019). This is the seond-largest block of the Victorian imperforate issues, exceeded only by the famous block of 29 of the Penny Half-Lengths. However, this block has a far higher face value: 24/- (£1/4/-) as against a mere 29d = 2/5d for the penny block. It also provides stark visual evidence why even singles with full margins are as scarce as the proverbial hen's teeth. [From another vendor]

927 F imageRouletted 7-9 at the GPO Melbourne 1/- blue SG 54, huge stamp with fragments of the adjoining units on all sides, neat Barred Numeral '1' cancel of Melbourne, under-catalogued at £250. Magnificant. Geoff Kellow states at pages 84-86 that prior to perforating being introduced in February 1859, "956,000 1/- stamps had been issued. This total would have included the small number of rouletted stamps ... the total is of the order of 15,000 to 20,000". Comprising at most 2% of the issue, rouletted stamps are 50-times scarcer than the imperforates (priced at £50 used).

Stanley Gibbons guarantee handstamp in violet on the reverse. Geoff Kellow states at page 92 that "Calvert ... used the serpentine rouletter ... to divide the sheets of 100 into upper and lower groups of 50" - stamps with the serpentine roulettes at top invariably stemming from the top row of the pane - and estimates that only around 7000 of the 160,000 stamps used for separation experiments were so treated. [The illustration is above Lot 930]
