Barwis & Moreton state at page 66 that "Deep red-brown ... is by far the rarest shade. Purves estimated that fewer than a dozen exist" including a pair on cover. John Barwis' defective pair was described as "the only recorded multiple of this exceptionally rare shade". This item is presumably only the third recorded pair.

A notoriously difficult unused stamp to find in fine condition. The absurdly close spacing of the transfers is demonstrated by this example.
