1891-99 Thin 'O.S.' Narrow Spacing Perf 15 4d lilac with the Overprint Double/Triple SG O66a, 7mm concealed tear at right, GPO duplex cancel, Cat £750. Gary Diffen's example - stated to be "the only used example known to the vendor" - sold for £300. Don Pearce's very fine example sold for $760.

3d olive to £1 blue SG 268-279 plus 2/6d bright violet blocks of 4, the 9d 10d & 2/6d bright violet each with Plate Number '1', generally well centred, fine to very fine facial appearance but with some gum-side blemishes including light overall toning/aging on the 5/- 10/- & £1, many units are unmounted, Cat $7480+ (£4480+), for mounted singles. 3d olive to £1 blue SG 268-279, all CTO with 'GPO ADELAIDE/SA' cds additionally with 'ULTRAMAR' Handstamp in Blue, the lower values with minor adhesions from the grid-lined page to which they had been affixed, Cat $4800. Rare. Sergio Sismondo Certificate (2009) for the 8d to £1 and all those except the 10/- signed in pencil by him. He states the 10/- "has a thin", which we can't detect. [From a UPU distribution for the Portuguese Colonies, the Ultramar handstamp being applied at Lisbon. See also Lot 510] (11)

4d 8d (pair only) & Perf 12 9d Value/Sheet Number vertical strips of 3 each with Watermark Error 'SUOTH' in the Margin ACSC S20a S25a & S28a, a few units are unmounted, Cat $2250+, for mounted pairs or blocks of 4 on which the 'H' is omitted. EIGHT PENCE: 8d bright ultramarine with 'EIGNT PENCE' Error ACSC S26d (SG 272a) being the third unit in an upper-right corner block of 4 with Plate Number '1', very well centred, ink notation in the margin, very lightly mounted, Cat $4000 (£1600++) in a footnote. South Australia's second-most famous error after the '3-PENCE' Omitted on 4d ultramarine. Ex Friedrich Krichauff and Michael Blake: sold at our auction of 29.6.2016 for $2975. Don Pearce's similar block of 4 - no ink notation - sold for $3235.

EIGHT PENCE: 8d bright ultramarine with 'EIGNT PENCE' Error ACSC S26d (SG 272a), very well centred, 'UNLEY/AP2/04/S-A' squared-circle well clear of the error, Cat $4500 (£3500). This famous error occurred on [Pos 19; R2/9] in the sheet. The Post Office stated that some 50 examples had been sold before the error was noted. The offending unit was then removed from the remaining sheets, which were issued with [Pos 19] blank & a normal single lightly tacked in the margin. The intercepted errors were officially incinerated. The ACSC states "it is much rarer used than mint, with probably less than 10 examples known". Gary Diffen recorded 12 used examples: his very lightly cancelled stamp sold for £1200. William Frazer's example sold for £2520. Jeff Harris' stamp sold for $2795, & another example sold at our auction of 10.4.2010 for $2990. The two examples in the 'Yarramundi' Collection sold for $4790 and an extraordinary $8385 respectively.

ONE SHILLING: 1/- brown with 'POSTAGE' & 'ONE SHILLING' in Brown-Red ACSC S30A (SG 275c) [Pos 10], an obvious & very attractive example, lightly mounted, Cat $2000 (£1400). Although often regarded as an error, the bicolour stamps are from the initial run of the first printing. During the print-run, the colour discrepancy was noted and corrected: see Bill Purves at page 88 where he states that it "...may be regarded as approaching the status of an error".
