PITCAIRN ISLANDS

Postal History
LotNo. Symbol Lot Description Estimate in AU$'s
2717 long cover/D image1922 (April) unfranked cover to "Mrs Gerald D Bliss, Cristobal, Canal Zone"  endorsed "Posted at Pitcairn/Isle" in red ink at top, minor blemishes & slightly trimmed at right, with two letters from Richard E Christian (later the Postmaster) both ordering supplies. Ex Humphrey Norvill and David Murray-Brown. Gerald Bliss was the US Postmaster at Cristobal, Canal Zone, and operated an unofficial clearing station for mail from Pitcairn Island. It seems that mail lodged shortly before a ship's departure would be endorsed by hand and not receive a 'No Stamps Available' cachet.  (3 items)

The islanders communicated with passing ships by wireless, which was provided by the Marconi Company in August 1921, and the 'Rotorua' called at Pitciarn Island on 17.2.1924. Robert E Christian was the great-great-great grandson of Fletcher Christian.
