88 # image£2 black & rose-carmine Sperati Forgery ACSC 55c, well-centred, very lightly mounted with almost full 'original gum', 'SPERATI/("55")/REPRODUCTION' handstamp on the reverse, Cat $17,500. The only Commonwealth of Australia stamp created by the greatest philatelic forger of them all, and one of the great rarities among forgeries of the British Empire. The principal identifier of the forgery is the Scratch from Warrnambool past the Western Coast of Tasmania. In 'Sperati' by the British Philatelic Association (BPA), it is stated at page 31 that this flaw is constant on Pos [L50] of the issued stamps. This is confirmed by WH Holbeach at page 52 and page 160, and by the ACSC in footnote 2. However, the variety is not listed in the ACSC for the issued stamps. The ACSC states that "the 'mint' is very rare, only two examples able to be traced". Neil Russell's example - part o.g., a few nibbled perfs at left & signed by Sperati on the reverse - sold at our auction of 27.2.2017 for $7320; the 'Artemis' example - no gum, a couple of missing perforations and a little aged - sold at our auction of 1.12.2021 for $5900. This is therefore a third example, of greater freshness, more vibrant colours and superior quality & appearance to either of the others.

This is an error. In the previous edition, this stamp was priced at $5000 for postal usage & $2500 for fiscal usage (which has been carried forward). This stamp is visually superior to the superb example sold at our Online Auction #7 for $868]
