653 c image1939-42 WWII airmails on the Empire & Horseshoe Routes display collection from outbreak of war & suspension of the subsidised Empire Air Mail Scheme (EAMS) to Italy entering the war & introduction of the Horseshoe Route (air to Durban from Cairo, then by sea to GB), to Japan's invasion of Malaya and the collapse of the Horseshoe Route. Included are many intermediates, notably to Thailand Iraq & Uganda plus feeder services to Hong Kong China Japan & Ceylon, and rare covers to Burma from the short-lived Emergency Routes in late-1941 (these with filing holes), plus Service Suspended covers to Singapore & Hong Kong, interest in the Australian censor labels & cachets. The east-bound route GB-Australia includes mail from Spain registered x2 (with rare frankings of both types of the 10pta Large Franco), Switzerland, Hungary, Turkey, Empire Air Training Scheme in Southern Rhodesia, KUT, Nigeria, Palestine, Iraq, Iran, Ceylon, Burma, Thailand & Malaya including of 31.12.1941 via Singapore-Batavia Shuttle then to Darwin via Broome. There is also mail to & from Australian Forces Abroad. The condition is variable but many are fine to very fine. Ex Daphne ('Dee') Pullan. 655 c image1940 (May 1) cover Sydney to Michigan flown to Auckland (b/s of 2MY40) suggesting that the 'RELEASED BY CENSOR' h/s - which implies delay - was applied in error for 'UNOPENED/BY/CENSOR', then by sea to Seattle (6.6) & by rail to Detroit (8.6). [The rate is problematic, apparently paid 5d for air to New Zealand (which is correct) + 3d surface to USA (?) + 3d registration]

656 c image1940 (July 6) airmail to USA endorsed "via Hong Kong" with Kangaroos 2/- maroon pair & Koala 4d x2 tied by Melbourne cds, 'VICTORIA/22JY/40/HONG KONG' transit b/s where 'G [Crown] R/OPENED BY CENSOR/ HONG KONG' resealing label affixed, re-directed on arrival with 'NORFOLK/AUG19/1940/VA' duplex on face, minor blemishes. The 4/8d per ½oz rate paid for airmail carriage by Qantas to Bangkok, Imperial/BOAC feeder service to Hong Kong and PanAm FAM-14 Trans-Pacific Clipper service to the USA. This item was carried on the last 'via Hong Kong' service: from 12.7.1940, PanAm opened its new FAM-19 Trans-Pacific Clipper service to Auckland NZ, and Australian mails were accepted at 4/- per ½oz, carried from Sydney to Auckland by TEAL Flying Boat.

657 c image1940 (Sep 22) cover Sydney to "Soudan" with 2d & 4d tied by light strike of 'MIL PO DARWIN NO 1' cds &, despite Forces '.../Concession Postal Rate' h/s in violet taxed "T2/-", plain label with 'OPENED BY CENSOR/.......' h/s & boxed 'PASSED BY/CENSOR/("D4")' h/s both in rosine, 'KHARTOUM/5OCT40' arrival b/s & forwarded to Egypt, minor blemishes. A very scarce & desirable cover. Ex Daphne ('Dee') Pullan. [The rate is problematic. The 9d Forces airmail rate was introduced on 22.11.1940, so this was apparently shortpaid 1/- for the Horseshoe Route. Was the sender informed otherwise? It's doubtful the 13 days transit from Darwin was possible by sea]

The rate was 2/- being half the letter rate of 4/-. [Social letter in English states "...I was interned [in UK] on June 28th. A fortnight later I joined a transport to Australia [the infamous 'Dunera']...I have no news at all about [my family] who were in France, and I fear the worst.
