1938 (Jan 17) linen parcel tag to the San Francisco Mint with outstanding multicoloured franking of Kangaroos CofA Wmk 5/- 10/- £1 & £2 + Merino 5d pair all tied by 'GPO PERTH/ RS / 2 /WA' cds, a couple of minor
defects that dion't affect the stamps. A fantastic franking with a full set of High Value Kangaroos. Kevin Nelson's similar label but with 5/- & 10/- Robes, sold at our auction of 27.11.2010 for $6115, and again at Peter O'Rourke's auction on
12.6.2020 for $5485.
At least until 1925, gold bullion was a prohibited export. However, during the 1930s, gold bullion was routinely sent to the United States for refining. A concessional rate of 2d per ounce - the same as the domestic letter rate - applied. The rate
was 2d x453 = 906d = £3/15/7d for a gold bar weighing 453oz + 3d registration + 1d late fee. From 1939, export of gold was again restricted, all gold produced within Australia & its Territories being required to be lodged in a refined state with the
Commonwealth Bank. [The Postal Regulations included a provision, buried in the small print, that if a parcel to the United States contained items worth more than $US100, it must include "an invoice certified by a United States consul". ]

1938 (Sept 5) parcel tag with Kookaburra 6d Typographed solo tied by 'KEMPSEY/NSW' cds, light but legible Sydney 'LOCATED IN ....["City"]/WITHOUT CONTENTS' boxed h/s and PMG's Dept NSW 'THIS wrapper was received
without contents ...' black/pink label affixed with 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE/9/SEPT/38/SYDNEY' rubber cds in red. The reference to 'without contents' presumably meant that the tag had become separated from its parcel; the merchandise rate was 1d per 2oz
x6.

1939-45 WWII civil censorship extensive display collection arranged by State and then by label & handstamp as per John Little, many of them rated highly on his 1-10 scale including crude provisional types for
Hobart & Darwin, 'NOT OPENED', 'RELEASED' & 'RETURNED' cachets. Most to Britain or America, but includes many airmail items that add both depth & colour. Also included are 'PASPRESS' covers x3, Governors' privileged mail from Hobart & Brisbane, and a
philatelic cover to the Azores (!) with 'This cover was open ("and empty") when it/reached the Censor' enclosure. Condition variable but many are fine to very fine. Ex Daphne ('Dee') Pullan. (Image1) (Image2)

1942 (July 9) distressed envelope inwards from Quebec, Canada with partial 'BEDFORD/P.Q.' duplex cancel and stamp soaked off, 'RECEIVED DAMAGED/BY WATER AT/G.P.O. SYDNEY 3' boxed h/s in violet on face, resealed
with 'It is very much regretted that the cover of the enclosed article was inadvertently damaged while in transit through the post' black/pink label affixed on reverse with 'G.P.O. SYDNEY/R.C.S./28AU42' cds, minor faults as to be expected but in
above-average condition for such items. This handstamp was used (in magenta) on mail received from the Flying Boat 'Coolangatta' which crashed in Sydney Harbour on 11.10.1944; it is not known what the incident was in this case.

1943 (Nov 5) usage of Japanese POW postcard from Australian POW Ronald Norman Medhurst with message headed "Prisoner of War Camp "A" Hong Kong", to Melbourne where re-directed to Benalla with St Kilda '15DE44'
cds, plus another sent on "30.3.44" re-directed to England with Melbourne '26JLY/1945' machine transit, both a little battered with minor creases & stains. [It is stated that there were only two mail despatches from Hong Kong during the war, in 1942
& 1943, both via Mozambique; it is not surprising that both cards took over a year to reach Australia, but it is unclear how they were carried]

1948 (Feb) parcel tag with printed 'QUEEN BEE! DELIVER QUICKLY', to Harrow (Vic) with KGVI 3½d Wrens, minor blemishes still quite fine. Rare. One of the most unusual postal articles we have ever seen, all the more
so for the 'DIRECTIONS FOR INTRODUCING' printed on the reverse & ending with "If you know a better method, use it"!! We know of only one other such item. [Between 10.12.1940 & 1.6.1949, the rate was 1d per 2oz x3 + ½d war tax. We have recorded only
three other Queen Bee items, all at different rates] (Image1)

$750 on cover) tied by largely very fine 'POST OFFICE/WEST MAITLAND, NSW' cds, slightly trimmed at edges & minor blemishes. The rate was 5/10d for the maximum parcel weight of between 7 & 11 pounds; the extra 6d was probably for 3d registration + 3d

1950 (March 7) Millars' Timber & Trading Co Ltd parcel tag to the firm's branch in Harvey (WA) with Arms £1 blue (ACSC $350 on cover) plus QE 1d purple-brown & KGVI 3½d tied by slightly indistinct Perth Registered
cds. The intrastate parcel rate for an article weighing up to the 11lb maximum was only 2/9d. This item paid the letter rate of 2½d up to 1oz plus 2d per additional 1oz for an item weighing between 7-8lbs plus registration & compensation fees,
presumably because it contained items as coins & bullion that could not be sent by parcel post. See Lot 607231 below for a similar item paying the later 3½d up to 1oz plus 2½d per additional 1oz rate. [In 1902, seven major WA sawmilling companies
merged with the Millar organisation to form Millars' Karri and Jarrah Company. In 1912 the name was changed to Millars' Timber and Trading Company Ltd, and in 1983 the company was taken over by Bunning Brothers Ltd]

weighing between 6-7lbs plus registration & compensation fees, presumably because it contained items as coins & bullion that could not be sent by parcel post. [See Lot 607233 above for a similarly-franked item paying the earlier 2½d up to 1oz plus 2d
