Kihn Brothers Bank Note Co: 'COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA/10s TEN SHILLINGS 10s' handpainted pen-&-ink essay in sepia & China white
(130x79mm) with palmtrees at the sides & two horns of plenty at the base on thin card (210x157mm), a separate piece with the oval vignette affixed featuring a seated allegorical figure with a globe to her right & Britain's shield to her left and a
background of mercantile & naval ships, plus an alternative vignette with the full-face figure now extolling agriculture, cattle, mining & trade with a single ship in the background, this attached at right by a piece of linen tape ACSC E77, with
stamp-size photographic reductions of both designs affixed below the artwork, Cat $7500. The majority of the 1051 submissions for the competition were uninspired, poorly executed &/or of no artistic merit whatsoever. The eight Kihn Brothers designs
were among the most professionally executed but were unacceptable because they were not from an Australian or British entrant.
The ACSC illustrates the two vignettes overlapped - obscuring the text at the top - & comments in a footnote about the alternative design, but there is no reference to the stamp-size reductions. The ACSC also states that the series of Kihn essays
"are mounted in a bound volume..." However, in the 'Chartwell' sale, they were offered separately, and sold in line with very low estimates.
Together with a copy of the 1884 CE Doepler lithograph 'AUSTRALIEN u OZEANIEN' that was clearly inspiration for Kihn's staff artist Adolph Glass.

3d olive Die I with Prominent Kiss Print ACSC 12Acb, well centred, lightly mounted, undercatalogued at $1750. The doubling of the
design is most evident 1) down the right-hand frame-lines, where there is a significant distortion towards the base; 2) in the Gulf of Carpentaria and down the eastern coast; 3) along the back of the kangaroo; and 4) on the letters 'NCE' of 'THREE
PENCE'. Ex 'Artemis'. The Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue states "known both mint and used. Approximately ten examples are recorded" but does not indicate how many are mint and how many are used. Sold at another Melbourne auction in
2012 for $3730 (where it was stated there that a very fine used example had been sold in 2010 for $5590).
