RARE USAGE OF THE PAGET WEST "6" FIRST TYPE DUPLEX POSTMARK ON COVER TO THE UNITED STATES.
The first duplex with number "6" was issued to receiving officer Thomas Burgess at Paget West at the time this cover was posted. There was no
example of this cancellation on cover in the Ludington collection. This cover left for New York on December 9th by the S.S. "Flamborough".

The 2¢ stamp, which was issued on March 14th, 1866, was
required for a letter weighting over one ounce. It was later that year when a minor act was passed exempting public service letters from postage.

The rate to Canada was 3d per ½ oz., but this letter was posted after normal closing time for the mail
by S.S. "Orinoco" leaving that afternoon. However by paying the late fee of double postage it caught the ship. The collection letter "B" in the date half of the Hamilton duplex provides confirmation. (Image1)
