Large margins, left stamp small corner crease, tied by barred numeral "131" cancels on 1847 folded letter from Liverpool to Red Hook, N.Y., blue Liverpool backstamp, markings include red "Boston Mass Nov 1" receiving cds & matching numeral "7" handstamp corrected to "12" with blue manuscript "22" above, Very Fine. This franking of 2 shillings paid the correct 1 shilling per half ounce rate for up to an ounce. Originally rated in the United States as a single under 300 miles inland (2 cents ship plus 5 cents), then changed to a single over 300 miles (2 cents ship plus 10 cents), and finally corrected to a double over 300 miles (2 cents ship plus 20 cents). Carried by Cunard Line steamer "Caledonia", depart LP 19-Oct, arriving Boston 5-Nov.

Bearing reproductions of three G.B. 1902 1d KEVII and two Russia 1913 7k Nicholas II issues, on watermark wove paper (110x123mm), with additional pen marks, Very Fine, a very rare two country sample essay, accompanied by photocopy RPSL certificate for similar sheetlet.

Dr. Eckerlin was director of Herbst & Illig of Frankfort-am-Main, Germany. In 1928, Dr. Eckerlin contacted Treadway of ABN for purposes of promoting a proprietary rotary intaglio printing process that was faster and cheaper than steel engraving printing.
