The likely sender was Private Crockett Foglesong, the addressee's cousin, of Co. B. 29th Va Inf. In late 1863 and early 1864, the unit was assigned to the Department of the Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee and was therefore in the Goodson area at the time of the straightline use. The SL-03C without the month is third state known used from Nov. 1863 into 1864. The three states of the Goodson straightline cancel was published in the Confederate Philatelist Jan-Feb 1994.

Sometime in the past, the strip of five was removed from cover and cut into two and dispersed to different collectors. Conrad Bush discovered these at separate times and reunited them to its original form as described in a Confederate Philately Sep-Oct 2003 article.
