2042   imageThe Roper Sporting Arms Co., illustrated violet design on cover showing "The Roper Four Shooting Shot-Gun", franked with 1870 3¢ Bank Note (corner defect) cancelled by negative star duplex with indistinct Hartford, Ct. cds to Windsor Locks Conn., Very Fine. Estimate  $150 - 200. The Roper firm was jointly owned by Christopher M. Spencer and Sylvester H. Roper, which operated from 1866-68 and produced 16 gauge shotguns. During this period, the firm produced less than 2,000 shotguns. In 1868, Spencer purchased the Roper Repeating Rifle Company from his partner and after having moved all activities from Amherst, Mass. to Hartford, Ct.; he reopened the company under the name of Roper Sporting Arms Company in 1869. The firm produced rifles and shotguns and operated until 1876. It is believed that the overall production did not exceed 600 guns. (Image1)

Oct. 5 machine cancel to North Yakima Wash., printed text advertising on reverse, which appears to be a type written note to Baker & Hamilton (senders of this cover) which is datelined "Emmett, Idaho, Sept. 20th, 1897" and reads, "Gentlemen:--I have been in the Mountains hunting for a month, hence the delay in answering yours. Three of us got 15 Deer. We had 2 'Savage' Rifles and they are the best gun made to my notion, although I used a 40/65 Winchester, but if I ever go again a 'Savage' goes with me.", Extremely Fine. Estimate  $1,000 - 1,500. A stunning cover which is very rare, this design was not present in the Biddle or Beals sales, and is the only example we have every offered, which realized $2,100 plus 15% in our Dec. 2006 sale.
