2014 11 imageConfederacy, 1863, 10¢ blue, die I, large margins, tied by Kinston, N.C. cds on Flag of Truce cover from a "Galvanized Yankee" soldier (a former Confederate soldier and Union P.O.W., turned Union soldier) to Marleys Mills, N.C. with both U.S. and C.S.A. examiners' markings; slightly reduced and repaired at left, otherwise Very Fine. Scott No. 11  Estimate $300 - 400. This cover was sent by Private Rains who was captured by Union forces at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. He was confined at Point Lookout, Md.until Jan. 21, 1864 at which time he took the oath of allegiance and joined the United States Service. Rains was then assigned to Norfolk, Va. on June 21, 1864. There are five known cover from Rains to Mr. John Straley (evidently his father-in-law) sent while Rains was in Norfolk on provost duty, probably guarding some of his former countrymen.Includes a copy of an article on this very correspondence by Galen Harrison that appeared in the Nov-Dec 1987 "Confederate Philatelist". 2025   imageConfederacy, Fort Delaware Prison, Delaware City, Delaware, lovely prisoner of war cover franked with United States 1861 3¢ rose cancelled by grid & postmarked "Delaware City, Del./Apr. 19" cds in combination with Confederate States 1863-64 10¢ blue tied by "Richmond, Va./May 9" cds, cover endorsed at lower left "via Fortress Monroe & Flag of Truce" and struck with "Prisoner's Letter/Examined/Fort Delaware" oval handstamp, 10¢ stamp with pre-use crease, Very Fine; with 1992 C.S.A. certificate. Estimate  $750 - 1,000. Mail from Confederate soldiers in Union prisons to the South generally bore the U.S. 3¢ stamp of 1861. However, Confederate postage was also required to be paid. This was accomplished by placing a Confederate stamp on the envelope when the prisoner had access to such postage. If the envelope lacked the proper Confederate postage, it was forwarded within the Confederacy with a postage "Due 10" marking. Because most Southern prisoners could not obtain Confederate stamps, covers with both Union and Confederate stamps are quite scarce. (Image1)

Howard in Baltimore, in the top right corner is a full impression of half dime coin which was formerly affixed to the cover to pay the Union postage on this cover from a prisoner of war, the cover was sent by Charles Howard to his wife, endorsed with manuscript "Exd" and "ExJ" Examiner's marking, minor edge wear & small part of flap torn away, Very Fine and rare, A significant historical cover from a political prisoner with one of the clearest impressions of an attached coin ever seen on a cover. Estimate  $1,500 - 2,000. Charles Howard (1802-1869), a member of an old colonial Baltimore family, was President of the Baltimore Board of Police at the outbreak of the war. He was arrested by U.S. Military Authorities on suspicion of Confederate sympathies on 7/1/1861 and was held as a Prisoner of State (Political Prisoner) at Fort McHenry (Md.), Fort Lafayette (N.Y.) and finally Fort Warren (Mass.) until his release on 11/27/1862. His wife, Elizabeth Phoebe Key, was the daughter of Frances Scott Key. Charles Howard's son, Frances Key Howard (1826-1872) was likewise arrested and held as a Prisoner of State at the same locations and at the same time as his father. A second son, John Eager Howard, served the Confederacy as a Captain on the Confederate States General Staff. (Image1)

Morgan and his men began raids in Kentucky that lasted three weeks while being chased by Federal troops, but were never captured. In July of 1863, Gen. Morgan and his men took part in their final raid, during a 24 day ride into Southern Indiana and Ohio, which ended when Gen. Morgan was captured. Morgan was sent to the Ohio Penitentiary, where he escaped. Morgan was shot and killed in a surprise attack by Federal cavalry at Greeneville, Tenn. on September 3, 1864.Hatch was the Confederate Assistant Prisoner Exchange Agent. The Col.
