Scott No. 34L4+15; $55,000  Estimate $3,000 - 4,000. FOUR KNOWN GENUINE USAGES OF THIS RARE WESTERN LOCAL EXIST ON COVER, ONE OF WHICH IS MISSING THE U.S. 10¢ ADHESIVE, MAKE THIS ONE OF ONLY THREE COMPLETE FRANKINGS.The California Penny Post was established by Henry L. Goodwin in San Francisco on June 25, 1855. For a fee of five cents, letters would be turned over to special messenger and carried, via Nicaragua, to New York City and placed in the US mails there. This cover shows proper markings for a cover that was actually carried via Nicaragua on the sailing of the Cortes. After a crossing of Nicaragua, the cover was carried by The Star of the North from Nicaragua to New York City where it arrived and entered the mails on July 25, 1855. (Image1)

York, Steamship" handstamps; light cover wear at left and sealed backflap tears affecting express handstamp, still Very Fine, an exceptional strike and this extremely rare express frank which is pictured in Coburn's Letters of Gold (pg. 195). Hawes purchased the remnants of Gregory's Express in May of 1853 and started his express which ran from Sacramento to San Francisco when he provided service to New York by steamer carrying treasure and mail. The wonderful cover was carried from the mines to Denver by Hinckley's and transferred to The Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Company, who carried the cover from Denver to St. Joseph where it entered the United States postal system. Clear bold double-oval horse and rider handstamp on incoming folded letter datelined "Flint Township, July 20th, 1851", addressed to Sacramento City, Cal. with red "Griggsville, Ill., Jul 21" cds and manuscript "10" rate, manuscript "Humbug $2." addressee location and express fee; cover soiling, still an Extremely Fine express marking, one of the earliest Hunter & Co.'s incoming express usages known from this one man's express, illustrated in Kutz's Gold Fever, ex Kutz; with 1981 P.F. certificate. Estimate  $1,500 - 2,000. Humbug was a very small mining camp severed only by express operators. This cover was picked up by Hunter in Sacramento and delivered to Humbug at the upper north fork of the American River. (Image1)

Printed corner card on cover with "Pendleton, Oregon, Feb. 19 1882" cds and duplex target killer, 1881 3¢ green tied, to Portland with "Have Your Mail Addressed To Street & Number" auxiliary marking in red, Portland receiving postmark on the back, docket at left, tiny piece of top backflap missing, Very Fine. Estimate  $100 - 150. Although not an express company, this company is listed in Nathan's Franks of Western Expresses "because of a corner card on a cover, as illustrated." This cover bears a different corner card and, in fact, other variations are known. The U. I. & O. Stage Co. was the last stage company to hold the overland mail contract from the railhead at Kelton, Utah Territory, via Boise City, Idaho Territory, to the railhead at Pendleton, Oregon, prior to construction of the Oregon Short Line Railroad. The U. I. & O. Stage Co. company also carried Wells Fargo express. The mail contract on the Boise City route was first let in 1864. The original route extended from Salt Lake City on the central overland mail route to The Dalles, Oregon. The original contractor was The Holladay Overland Mail and Express Company. (Image1)

Samuel Brannan was an American settler, businessman, and journalist, who founded the "California Star" newspaper in San Francisco, California. He is considered the first publicist of the California gold rush and was its first millionaire. He is also credited with starting the California gold rush by traveling to San Francisco, waving above his head a bottle filled with gold dust, and boisterously proclaiming that gold had been discovered on the American River.
