United Nations, Stamp Art, #1 Design. The original painting itself and the large final design, two of the most important items of 20th century stamp art, the preliminary painting (240mm x345 mm) in acrylic and gouache by the renowned artist O C Meronti for his rendition of "Humanity" for the first United Nations postage stamp, the 1951 1c "Peoples of the World"; also accompanied by Meronti's final design of the stamp, 120mm x 145mm, as eventually printed by Thomas De La Rue & Company. Estimate $3,000 - 4,000. The painting and final design sold for combined $5,750 in a 2003 Greg Manning auction; both items are unique and unquestionably important, not just in the philatelic sphere. Greece, Tameion Control Handstamp. 1896 40l violet horizontal. pair with Tameion Control handstamp (black) on face & block of 10 with Tameion Control handstamp (blue) on reverse, some perfs separations, o.g., Very Fine; with M. Tsironis certificate for pair. Scott No. 123 Estimate $300 - 400. Greece became independent in 1830 after centuries of Turkish oppression. But there was no peace since that time. During the occupation of Northern Thessaly in 1897 Turkish troops seized a large number of Olympic stamps. To avoid the financial loss in consequence to the smuggling of these stamps from the Greek territory the government ordered the inland revenue offices to apply control cancellations to all existing stocks of stamps. The order was to do it on the front, but also backstamped stamps exist in black, blue, and violet. Tameion cancellations were used in about 30 cities. (Image1)
