Tsironis certificate for pair. Scott No. 123  Estimate $300 - 400. Greece became independent in 1830 after centuries of Turkish oppression. But there was no peace since that time. During the occupation of Northern Thessaly in 1897 Turkish troops seized a large number of Olympic stamps. To avoid the financial loss in consequence to the smuggling of these stamps from the Greek territory the government ordered the inland revenue offices to apply control cancellations to all existing stocks of stamps. The order was to do it on the front, but also backstamped stamps exist in black, blue, and violet. Tameion cancellations were used in about 30 cities. (Image1)
