Of over 160 covers mostly mounted in two albums, addressed to Phillip Cockrill in England; a comprehensive range of towns for the period with an array of early frankings (many sent to towns that had on P.O. and postmarked at nearest office); townmarks including Careysburg, Ganta, Gedetarbo (two different on same cover), Grand Cess, Greenville (two different), Harbel, River Cess, Tappita (2 different on cover), Sallala, etc., also includes a selection of oversized covers sent from the British Embassy and Cape Palmas Catholic Mission with an array of various 1900-40's issues frankings, also including a series of photographs of Monrovia including pictures of various postal boxes and offices, F.-V.F., interesting postmark reference. To Amsterdam, Holland, franked with 1937, 6¢ green & black, strip of 8 + 3¢ violet & black (strip folded over cover and 3¢ on reverse) canceled by "Monrovia, Liberia, 19. III. 38" cds's, with purple "Correspondence Avion, retardee st deterioree, par suite de l'accident aerien, survenu le 23 Mars 1938" crash cachet handstamp; showing signs of wear from crash, Very Fine, a very rare crash cover originating in Liberia. Scott No. 276+273 Estimate $200 - 300. On March 23, 1938, the Air France mail plane struck a mountain peak of Cinq Croix in the Pyrenees turned over and rolled into a ravine. The recovered mail consisted of 4 sacks intact and 7 others broken open. This cover was apparently from the later. (Image1)
