Weber & Co. merchant corner card cover to Apia, Samoa, reverse with backflap slits and two German "Kaiserliches Gouvernment von Samoa" Official seals sealing, additional purple manuscript "Unter Krieghsrecht geöffnet" (Opened Under Martial Law) notation below, "Apia, 20.8.14" cds alongside; cover with central fold and filing pinhole, otherwise Very Fine, one of nine German Provisional Censor usages known, with this commercial usage originating from San Francisco. Estimate  $2,000 - 3,000. Shortly after the start of World War I, the Imperial German Governor issued regulations regarding the postal service to and from the Colony of Samoa. On August 20th the last known incoming mail arrived at Apia and since this mail violated a part of the newly enforced postal regulations, the German Postal Authorities decided to institute censorship procedures. It is very likely that these letters were the last items of mailed handled by the Imperial German Post Office in Samoa before the occupation of the Colony by New Zealand forces on August 29, 1914. . Sonoma" cover, 1910-11 U.S.S. Annapolis covers, 1915 Pago Pago registered covers franked with Parcel Post issues and a New Zealand overprint issue combination mailed from Pago Pago, 1928 Pago Pago machine postmark canceling Hawaii 1898, 2¢ brown with straight line ship marking tying, 1920-30's incoming and dues usages, Tonga tin can mail via Pago Pago, includes a selection of used U.S. Wash-Frank and 4th Bureau issues mostly in blocks, section of 1932-42 Leone, Tutuila postmark covers, several hundred later covers including F.A.'s & Prexie issue usages including commercial censor material, 1960 cacheted covers from the various American P.O.'s, section of off cover precancels, etc., F.-V.F., an excellent foundation for an American Samoa collection. 2494   imageSamoa, U.S.S. Annapolis, Dec 12, 1910. Clear strike of four bar postmark on cover to San Francisco, manuscript "From, Chap. H.M.T. Pearce, Tutuila, Samoa" endorsement, Very Fine, an early and scarce U.S. naval ship usage from Tutuila, Samoa. Estimate  $75 - 100. The Annapolis departed San Francisco, Cal. on 5 April 5th bound for American Samoa. The gunboat arrived at Tutuila, Samoa on May 22nd and began duty as station ship. She discharged those duties until September 1911, when she departed Pago Pago to return home. The gunboat was decommissioned once more on December 16, 1911. (Image1)
