A CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE "MESILLA N.M." DATESTAMP FROM THE CONFEDERATE OCCUPATION OF NEW MEXICO IN THE NEWLY-FORMED TERRITORY OF ARIZONAIn July 1861 Lt. Col. John Baylor raised the Confederate flag at Fort Bliss, later occupying Fort Fillmore and the town of Mesilla. On August 1st he issued a proclamation establishing the Confederate Territory of Arizona, naming Mesilla as its capital. In January 1862, the Confederate Congress passed a bill establishing the Territory of Arizona. President Davis signed the bill in January and issued his presidential proclamation shortly thereafter.Albert N[elson] Alford enlisted as a private in Company A, Texas Mounted Rifles, which was organized in May 1861, but reorganized in April 1862 as the 2nd Cavalry Regiment. The regiment was active in various conflicts in New Mexico Territory. In late 1861 and early 1862, it was actually known as the Army of New Mexico, but later well known as part of the Trans-Mississippi Department. According to specialists in Arizona and New Mexico postal history, there are fewer than ten examples known of the Mesilla, N.M. occupation marking. (Image1)

Clements, Chief Appointment Bureau, Post Office Department, Richmond, Va., Confederate States America"; cover tear at right, otherwise Very Fine. Estimate  $150 - 200. Captain Fayette (Lafayette) Hewitt (1831-1909). In 1857 he accepted the position of Postmaster General in Washington D.C. until the Republicans took office. At the request of the new Confederate government, he then undertook the job of establishing the Confederate post office in Montgomery, Alabama. After this task was successfully accomplished, he asked for a field position. In February of 1863 he was assigned to General Breckinridge's command, where he served as Captain of the 6th Kentucky Infantry Regiment. Three horses were shot out from under him during the war and although never wounded, mini balls passed through his hat and clothes numerous times. (Image1)

Martin, Fla. Brigade", couple discoloration spots, F.-V.F. Estimate  $150 - 200. Marion Light Artillery was organized on Amelia Island, Florida, in June, 1861. Later it moved to Kentucky in March 1862 and was involved in the Battle of Richmond, Ky. and also took part in the fight at Perryville. The company served in S. C. Williams', M. Smith's, and L. Hoxton's Battalion of Artillery, and participated in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Nashville. It then was involved in the defense of Mobile and was included in the surrender of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana at Citronelle, AL. The unit was commanded by Captains John M. Martin, Thomas J. Perry and Robert P. McCants. (Image1)

(State Troops) to his wife in Bellville, Texas with manuscript "Due 10" in pencil at upper right; "1863" docketing at top, Very Fine, signed by Brian Green on reverse. Estimate  $150 - 200. John Patterson Osterhout (1826-1903) was a lawyer, journalist, and politician from Pennsylvania. Upon receiving his license to practice law in 1851 he moved to Austin County, Texas. He took a hand in publicizing the 1861 alleged slave rebellions in North Texas and revealed that in his years in Texas he had become an ardent defender of the extreme Southern point of view. Although once skeptical of the economic benefits of slavery, by 1860 Osterhout defended it as a positive good and was a slave owner. He was an early advocate of using slaves as soldiers. After the war he quickly accepted defeat and the end of slavery. (Image1)

Edwin Gray Lee to his wife; flap tear, Very Fine. Estimate  $300 - 400. Edwin Gray Lee entered the Confederate Army with the Virginia Infantry, and following the Battle of Bull Run, was promoted to major and then lieutenant colonel. Lee was involved in the Seven Days battles, Second Manassas and Cedar Mountain. He was captured at Sharpsburg. Paroled on September 26, 1862, he rejoined his unit and led the Virginia Infantry at the Battle of Fredericksburg on Dec. 13, 1862. He resigned soon thereafter due to his bad health. When his health recovered he rejoined the Confederate cause as a colonel where he served on the staff of Gen. Robert Ransom Jr., who was in charge of the defense of Richmond. In late spring, 1864, he took up command at Staunton and with troops he recruited for the defense of the Shenandoah Valley, he fought at the Battle of Piedmont, June 5, 1864. For his efforts at Staunton, Lee was promoted to brigadier general on Sept. 23, 1864. (Image1)
