The address on this cover, "Mail Station Head of Echo" refers to the "mail station" that was maintained by Wells Fargo at the railroad construction camp during the building of the final segments of the Union Pacific Railroad westward across Utah Territory toward Promontory Summit where the United States' first Transcontinental Railroad was officially completed on May 10, 1869. The Wells Fargo mail station moved as the UPRR construction camp moved. The Salt Lake City postmark and the Wells Fargo handstamp are both dated Sept. 11, 1868, which suggests that the cover was originally mailed at or neasr Salt Lake City, and then handed over to Wells Fargo for final delivery. At the time, as the address indicates, the UPRR construction camp and the Wells Fargo mail station were located at the head of Echo Canyon, north of Salt Lake City and just east of Ogden. The reference to " John W. Youngs Camp" in the address denotes that the addressee probably worked for John Young. Young held the contract to supply ties to the UPRR during their westward push across Utah Territory. (Image1)
