DeSaussure, the son of Gen. Wilmot Gibbes DeSaussure, small ink erosion spot, Very Fine and attractive. Scott No. 6 Estimate $300 - 400. DeSaussure was the son of Gen. Wilmot Gibbes DeSaussure. After the U. S. Army evacuated Fort Moultrie in 1861, Gen. DeSaussure was placed in charge of the abandoned fortress. At the time of the bombardment of Fort Sumter by Confederate military forces, he was in command of artillery on Cummings Point. He later took command of the Fourth Brigade, South Carolina Militia, and held this position to the close of the War. He commanded the force of reserves, which engaged in the defense of Charleston, and was appointed Adjutant General of South Carolina. (Image1)

Frameline just shaved at top, otherwise large margins light crease, tied by "Camden, Ala./Jun. 27" (1862) cds on overpaid drop cover, flap missing & couple small cover tears`, F.-V.F. Scott No. 6 Estimate $150 - 200. The cover addressed to Col. James Chesnut, who later became a Brigadier General Chesnut (1815 - 85) was a lawyer and politician, who later became a U.S. Senator from South Carolina. He served in the Senate from 1858 until South Carolina's secession from the Union in 1860. Once the Civil War broke out, James Chesnut, Jr. became an aide to President Jefferson Davis and was commissioned a brigadier general in the Confederate Army.Chesnut was married to Mary Miller (1823 - 1886) who was a South Carolina author noted for writing a sophisticated diary describing the American Civil War and her upper class circles of Southern society. In 1981 the historian C. Vann Woodward completed his annotated edition of the diary, which was republished under the title Mary Chesnut's Civil War. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982. (Image1)

Four margins, light crease, tied by the pre-war "Charleston S.C." smaller single rim postmark on yellow cover to Camden, S.C., cover with a little overall foxing & wear, F.-V.F. Scott No. 11 Estimate $150 - 200. This postmark was only very occasionally used in the Confederate period. The postmarks more commonly used were the small double circle or the large single rim with yeardate and missing digit. This pre-war mark differs from the other more commonly used C.S.A. single rim device in that it is somewhat smaller than the C.S.A. mark, has a different style of lettering, and has no yeardate within the postmark. Only about 40 covers are recorded where this pre-war Charleston postmark was used from mid-1862 to mid-1864. A very good example of this not commonly seen Charleston postmark. (Image1)

Siege artillery is heavy artillery primarily used in military attacks on fortified places. The weight and size of siege artillery prevented it from regularly travelling with the armies. When needed, siege artillery and other material needed for siege operations were assembled into what was called a siege train.Major Edward Manigault, was one of the commanding officers ordered by General P. G. T. Beauregard to document his unit's daily operations, began a diary in July 1863 that would become one of the most informative records to survive the Civil War. (Image1)

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ greenish blue. Large margins, tied by manuscript cancel & matching Manchester, S.C./Nov. 23 manuscript postmark on cover addressed to "Augustine Smythe, C.S.S. Palmetto State, Charleston, S.C.", some over all staining & small sealed tear affecting postmark, F.-V.F., a rare cover addressed to a Confederate Ironclad. Scott No. 11c Estimate $500 - 750. CSS Palmetto State, an ironclad ram, was built in Charleston in January 1862. Her armor was 4" thick on the shield, backed by 22" of wood, 2" of iron elsewhere. Before dawn on January 31, 1863, Palmetto State and her sister ram CSS Chicora crept through thick haze to surprise the Union blockading force off Charleston. Taking full advantage of her low silhouette, the ironclad stole in under the guns of USS Mercedita, ramming as well as firing into her. Completely disabled, with no guns that would depress enough to fire at Palmetto State, the Union ship surrendered. The ram then turned her attention to USS Keystone State and put several shells into that blockader. Her steam chests punctured, Keystone State lost all power and had to be towed to safety. A long-range gun action between the Confederate rams and other Federal blockaders then took place, but little damage was inflicted by either side before Palmetto State and Chicora withdrew to safety within Charleston Harbor. The attack of the Confederate rams caused the temporary withdrawal of the blockaders from their inshore positions and led to the claim by the Confederate Government, unsuccessfully advanced, that the blockade of Charleston had been raised.Palmetto State was burned by the Confederates upon the evacuation of Charleston on February 18, 1865. Scott No. 12 Estimate $400 - 600. After the U. S. Army evacuated Fort Moultrie in 1861, Gen. DeSaussure was placed in charge of the abandoned fortress. At the time of the bombardment of Fort Sumter by Confederate military forces, he was in command of artillery on Cummings Point. He later took command of the Fourth Brigade, South Carolina Militia, and held this position to the close of the War. He commanded the force of reserves, which engaged in the defense of Charleston, and was appointed Adjutant General of South Carolina. (Image1)
