Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ green. Two singles, large margins, right stamp in at right, tied by "Mobile, Ala./Jul. 23" (1862) double circle postmark on neat cover addressed to "C.M. Morfit, Ram Arkansas, Vicksburg, Miss.", part of flap torn away & unnoticeable horizontal cover fold, Very Fine. Scott No. 1 Estimate $1,500 - 2,000. The "Arkansas" keel was laid in Memphis in October of 1861, however Federal threat caused her to be completed at Yazoo City, Miss. She was 165 feet long and carried a crew of 200 men with a battery of 10 guns. On July 15, 1862, she fought her way into Vicksburg, Miss. through the Union flotilla of 30 plus warships. This cover was sent to the C.M. Morfit (Assistant Surgeon) abroad the "Arkansas" during this period.On August 6, 1862 she was attacked below Baton Rouge by seven gunboats and disabled beyond repair. Her crew set her afire and she drifted downstream before blowing up and sinking to avoid capture. (Image1)

Johnston Pettigrew" with red crayon manuscript "Due 5", Extremely Fine, a nice combination of 5¢ paid by stamps & manuscript 5¢ due. Scott No. 1 Estimate $200 - 300. After participating in the capture of Fort Sumter, Pettigrew enlisted in the Confederate service, and was commissioned a brigadier general on February 26, 1862. He led a brigade at the Battle of Seven Pines, and was wounded and captured there. He later commanded a brigade at Pickett's Charge, remaining on the field despite a wound in the hand. Pettigrew was severely wounded in the abdomen at Falling Waters, Maryland, on July 14, 1863, and died from the wound on July 17, 1863. (Image1)
