This is the first printed frank and very rare, seven are known with only three used correctly during the Adams period, the rest were used just as envelopes after the demise of Adams in early 1855, this is one of the three used during the Adams period. Later Wells Fargo adopted this style frank and used it for about 30 years. (Image1)

Phinneas Banning was a very successful freight and stage operator. Accompanying this lot is a contemporary advertisement that he ran the US Mail Stage line as well a freight. Estimate  $4,000 - 6,000. This cover probably originated south of Crescent City and was carried there by Dugan who then gave it to Johnson for the rest of the journey to Yreka.
