Dateline on folded letter addressed to Vermont and carried completely outside the mails, lengthy 3-page letter tells of getting $1,200 for a claim and wanting to sell the current claim for a $1,000, coming home for a visit next spring, and the prices he pays for supplies brought to his door, Very Fine. Estimate $200 - 300. Washington Flat, on the north side of the Merced River above Bagby, was a very small mining camp from 1850. Survey, Steamer Hassler" at lower left, a concession was given to Naval personnel to send letters due which waived the ship captain's fee of 2¢ therefore a rate of 3¢ normal postage if on a federally controlled ship, Very Fine, another view of the rating on this cover is that it was not in a Federally controlled ship (this mail was carried on Pacific Steamship Company ships) and should have carried the normal 10¢ rate, this dual handstamp usage is unique based on the Meyer Survey. Scott No. 17a Estimate $5,000 - 7,500. An extremely rare use of the 1851 12¢ bisect in combination with the "Via Nicaragua/Ahead of the Mails" handstamp. During the period from 1853 to April 1855, bisected 12¢ 1851 stamps were used on mail from San Francisco to prepay the 6¢ over-3,000 miles rate to the East Coast.
