Over 60 covers from correspondence to San Francisco, Cal., many sent by her two son's as soldier's in Manila, Philippines during the Spanish American War; various soldier usages including patriotic corner card, multicolored Admiral Dewey & U.S. Flagship Olympia postcard, many different soldier letter endorsement handstamps and an array of Philippines postmarks including Mil Sta. 1 San Francisco & Manila, San Fernando, Sta No. 5 Bacoloo, P.I. with an enclosure from sender who is working at and living above the post office, Dacupan & Manila R.P.O., etc., few with enclosures including early letter datelined Camp Dewey, Lizon Island, August 6, 1898 with interesting content; We are on the shores of Manila Bay and about four miles by road to the walls of Manila. You can imagine the size of the camp with only two in a tent and some 8,000 soldiers. Well Mrs. Baird, we have had our first encounter with the Spainards and live to tell the tale, although the bullets whizzed around our ears pretty lively, one stuck right in front of my face and the sand and mud splattered all over me, but the bullets are nothing compared with the shells…, lot accompanied with over a dozen registry cards, some post-war sendings and a 1899 Memorial Service card for service in San Francisco honoring the 1st California Volunteers who had been taken during the war; condition a little mixed, F.-V.F., a fascinating correspondence during the Spanish American War (additional Baird correspondence see lots 771 & 1921).
