The primary goal of the association would be to "promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis," according to a magazine editorial written by Church. After being granted a charter by the state of New York on November 17, 1871, the NRA was founded. Civil War Gen. Ambrose Burnside, who was also the former governor of Rhode Island and a U.S. Senator, became the fledgling NRA's first president. An important facet of the NRA's creation was the development of a practice ground. In 1872, with financial help from New York state, a site on Long Island, the Creed Farm, was purchased for the purpose of building a rifle range. Named Creedmoor, the range opened a year later, and it was there that the first annual matches were held. (Image1)

Christopher M. Spencer was the inventor of the first effective repeating breech loading military rifle and in 1860, Spencer was granted a patent for his new carbine. With his new patent in hand, Spencer founded the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company in 1862. This remarkable new rifle was one of the most important arms used during the Civil War and it was with this gun, which leads to revolutionizing warfare as it was then waged. In mid-1868 the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company ceased any operations and in December of that year, the company was sold to the Fogarty Repeating Rifle Company. In addition to being the founder of the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company, Spencer was also a partner in the Roper Repeating Rifle Company. This firm was jointly owned by Spencer and Sylvester H. Roper, which operated from 1866-68 and produced 16 gauge shotguns. During this period, the firm produced less than 2,000 shotguns. In 1868, Spencer purchased the Roper Repeating Rifle Company from his partner and after having moved all activities from Amherst, Mass. to Hartford, Ct.; he reopened the company under the name of Roper Sporting Arms Company in 1869. The firm produced rifles and shotguns and operated until 1876. It is believed that the over-all production did not exceed 600 guns. (Image1)
