Light but readable oval date stamp on 1864 3¢ pink entire with second scroll-type Oakland printed frank to San Diego, blue double circle "Pacific Union Ex Co/San Francisco" showing that Bamber exchanged this letter with Pacific Union for carriage from San Francisco to San Diego; small water stain at top left, F.-V.F. and scarce. Estimate  $150 - 200. The year dated oval is important because it clearly shows that Pacific Union was operating as a carrier of mail prior to July 1, 1868, the date that Nathan gives for the company's formation. This cover further illustrates that Bamber and Pacific Union had some arrangement for the exchange of mail, much like Bamber's arrangement with Wells Fargo. (Image1)
