Manuscript endorsement on folded letter to Illinois datelined "Sacramento City, August 1st., 1849", carried to San Francisco where it entered the mails & postmarked with "San Francisco, Sep 1" cds (Williams SAF-260) with manuscript "40" rate at right, letter contains wonderful details of overland journey, "Dear John, After a long, tedious and perilous trip of 104 days across the plains we have arrived at our point of destination in good health and spirits. There are about 3000 teams behind us, now crossing the plains and God only knows when they shall reach here. I came down by the way of Fort Hall and down the Humbolt River and from there across a desert of 60 miles from the Humbolt Sink to Carson River thence across the Sierra Nevada Mountains to this place. The desert we had to cross and our sufferings, no tongue can tell or pen describe. I saw men drop off their horses, speechless and animals lay down and die for the want of water. For my part I can say it was the first time I saw death staring me in the face…I am going to work tomorrow, and will make 15 dollars a day. Gold is plenty everywhere and I am going to make it and save it.", cover with some discoloration, Very Fine, a great letter & usage, the Post Office in Sacramento opened on July 1, 1849, however no known postmarks exist prior to August 24, 1849. Red cds (Williams SAC-2520) on circa 1853 folded letter with matching "10" rate handstamp to Massachusetts, letter datelined "Tolls Diggings, Sunday July 20/5?" miner's letter with fine contents, "I will now give you an outline of our wanderings in Califury (sic), we started from Burns diggings last March and footed it to the North Fork of the Feather, a distance of about 600 miles, we went through snow from 8 to 10 feet deep. But when we got there the Oro had stepped out. We stayed there about 6 weeks till we got about hard up and then started back, and are now camped in Tolls diggings. We have had very hard luck lately but the old saying is, Faint heart never won fair lady, we are bound to stay in the mines until we do make something… I have got a nice specimen for you which I dug myself, it is pure gold and weighs just an Ounce. Liquor sells for 4/- a drink, yet there are more drunken men to be seen in the streets than any place in the United States…The gold diggings are all in the borders of the mountains among the hills and resemble the highlands on the North River, there being no rain here between the months of April and November - the rivers get dry in the bed of which they dig for the gold among rocks, roots and stones. Cds (Williams SAF-350) on 1851 folded letter to New York with matching "10" rate handstamp, miner's letter to his sister, "I am, as I wrote Father, now living among the Indians and it is more probable that will be my residence for the next three years…, I am nearly east from Sacramento City about forty miles, where whenever you think of me, you may imagine me surrounded by at least twenty wild savages, all assembled from different rancherias or camps for the purpose making their purchases or to make some request of there 'Minnim Nishiman hook', or grand Indian Captain, as they have learned to call me or for some other equally interesting purpose." plus a lengthy description of the San Francisco fire in 1851 and vivid description of the Vigilance Committee and the hangings performed by them, "There has been a day here almost equal to that of the great fire - crime has been progressing to such an extent and went unpunished so long that the people have at last formed themselves into what they term a Vigilance Committee for the purpose of stopping the progress of crime. They today made a descent upon the Jail and took from it two prisoners and in twenty minutes they were suspended [between] heaven and earth before the gaze of the thousands of the excited multitude. A full account of it you will find in the papers as well as an official hanging at Sacramento of three robbers.", cover tear at top sealed with scotch tape creating stain, Very Fine, a great historical letter. The letter refers to the infamous actions taken by the Committee of Vigilance on Aug. 24th, 1851 (the date of this letter), who broke into the San Francisco jailhouse and kidnapped prisoners, S. Whittaker and R. McKenzie, and hanged from the second story of the Committee's rooms. Sam Brannan, the leader of the Committee, addressed the crowd who had gathered after the hangings, stating that the committee could not act otherwise. (Image1)

He was to become the principal leader of the Cherokee Nation and the only Native American Confederate General during the Civil War.
