Magenta manuscript postmark with matching "Paid 80" rate, on double rate turned cover to Perrysburg, Ohio, reverse addressed to "Port San Francisco, Upper California" with red "Perrysburg, O., May 15" cds, matching red "X" rate handstamp crossed out and rerated "40" in pen, cover opened at sides for display, some cover tears and slight soiling, F.-V.F., a wonderful and rare turned cover usage. Bold straight two-line postmark (Williams SAC-2470) on cover to New York City, matching "Paid 40" rate handstamp alongside, internal cover hole in address panel and part of backflap expertly restored, otherwise Extremely Fine, a magnificent strike of this rare postmark. Estimate $300 - 400. This postmark in J. Williams' book "California Town Postmarks 1849-1935" lists the earliest known usage of this postmark as October 26, 1850.
