1867 Grilled Issue, A.-Z. Grills
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
3248     79 image1867, 3¢ rose, A. grill. O.g., lightly hinged, clearly defined grill, radiant color, beautifully centered with virtually intact perfs which is very rare for this issue, Extremely Fine and choice, ex-Spencer Anderson, with 1937 A.P.S. & 1997 P.F. certificates.
Scott No. 79; $8,500.

THE 1867 3¢ A. GRILL IS SELDOM FOUND IN SOUND, ORIGINAL GUM CONDITION, ESPECIALLY WITH INTACT PERFORATIONS AND CENTERING SUCH AS THIS GEM EXAMPLE.

The experimental A Grill covered the entire stamp. On most examples, this caused the perforations to virtually disintegrate when the stamps were separated. Examples of the 3¢ A. Grill such as the stamp offered here, with virtually full perforations all around, are true condition rarities.

3252 o    85B image1867, 2¢ black, Z. grill. Perfectly centered with enormous margins by any standards, full and clearly defined grill showing all of the points, lightly cancelled by cork cancel, Extremely Fine and choice, ex-Puliafito, with 1995 P.F. & 2008 P.S.E. certificates, the latter Graded (XF-Superb 95, SMQ $10,000).
Scott No. 85B; $1,200.

A SUPERB GEM WHICH RANKS AMONG THE FINEST USED EXAMPLES OF THE 1868 2¢ Z. GRILL. AN OUTSTANDING STAMP DESTINED FOR THE FINEST COLLECTION. ONLY 2 EXAMPLES ARE GRADED HIGHER BY THE P.S.E. (BOTH 98).

Narrow spacing on the plates used to print the Black Jacks did not provide enough room between subjects for the large Perf 12 gauge holes. As a result, most Black Jack stamps have perfs touching the design on one or more sides. The rarity of four-margin copies significantly increases when the Z. Grill is factored into the equation.

Scott No. 85C; $25,000.

AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE LIGHTLY HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 3¢ WASHINGTON Z. GRILL.

Excluding the ultra-rare grills, the 3¢ Z. Grill is the rarest of the regularly produced grilled issues. Examples of this issue are usually well off center and most often faulty. This stamp, lightly hinged original gum and attractive margins is a very rare example of the 3¢ Z. Grill.

A WONDERFUL STAMP WHICH IS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND IN THE GEM CONDITION, WHICH HAS POST OFFICE FRESH GUM, COLOR AND GRILL.

The 2¢ E. Grill is a surprisingly difficult stamp to find in this superb condition. It is much scarcer in this condition than the 2¢ F. Grill.nnAfter an online search, in our opinion, this is the finest mint single which is borne out by the fact that this example has realized the highest price for a mint 1867 2¢ E. Grill, $12,000 (Siegel Sale 826, Lot 248)
