This unusual route endorsement is found on a limited number of covers to New Market during this timeframe. Its significance in relation to contracted mail routes was confirmed by the late Richard Krieger (Confederate Philatelist Nos. 243-244). AN EXTRAORDINARY USED EXAMPLE OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES 10¢ FRAMELINE ISSUE - A STUNNING SINGLE WHICH IS CERTAINLY ONE OF THE FINEST EXISTING.

The framelines are the most important characteristic of Scott 10. The lines were engraved on the plate and served as a guide for the siderographer when aligning the transfer roll to make the plate. Since each stamp shares framelines with the adjoining positions, the example offered here with essentially four intact framelines is a true condition rarity.

After a quick search of our computerized records and the Siegel Auction site, this is in our opinion, the finest known off cover single. (Image1)

Large margins, light crease & minor gum staining, tied on cover to Augusta, Ga. by tied by "Mobile, Ala, May 29" (1864) double circle postmark, reverse with manuscript endorsement "Forwarded by the Louisiana Committee at Mobile" on backflap (small hinge affixed at left), Very Fine and rare, signed MacBride.

AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF A COVER CARRIED FROM NEW ORLEANS TO MOBILE BY THE LOUISIANA RELIEF COMMITTEE.

This cover was smuggled out of Union Occupied New Orleans with the postage paid by the committee and applied at Mobile. From the well known "Reynes" correspondence which was examined by Col. Jules Denis, CSA Provost Marshal at Mobile.

On May 31, 1863, the Louisiana Relief Committee came into existence, established by expatriate New Orleans residents residing in Mobile, Alabama. The committee aimed to ease the hardships faced by impoverished citizens who continued to live in U.S.-occupied New Orleans. Their efforts included organizing shipments of essential supplies, such as food and clothing to New Orleans. Additionally, they assisted citizens in relocating from New Orleans to the Confederate States. (Image1) (Image2)

Single and strip in different shades, small flaws, manuscript canceled and tied by light blue Petersburg, Va. cds's on cover to Capt. F. P. Leavenworth in Shreveport, La. with manuscript "Via Meridian" endorsement at bottom left, with colorless embossed "Collegiate Seminary for Young Ladies, Petersburg, Virginia, Rev. A.J. Leavenworth, Principal" corner card (Dietz Type I) at top left, F.-V.F., a rare Trans-Mississippi express cover usage on a advertising cover.

This Trans-Mississippi Express Mail cover surfaced in 2006 and is one of two known express covers with a college imprint. The envelope was addressed to Captain F. P. Leavenworth (Frederick Peabody Leavenworth) and was sent by Reverend Abner Johnson Leavenworth, father of Captain Leavenworth and Principal of the Collegiate Seminary for Young Ladies.

Frederick Peabody Leavenworth was commissioned as a Captain in early 1862, and served as Ordnance Officer under General E. Kirby Smith in the Trans-Mississippi Department. Captain Leavenworth survived the war and died in 1920. (Image1)
