Colombia, Curtiss Aeroplane Co., Promotional Labels. Set of 19 multicolored lithographed labels mostly depicting the Curtiss Aeroplane in flight, each with corner selvage
showing different Curtiss related slogan and the "Curtiss" script logo in blue on the other, includes eight of the nine designs used and surcharged "Compania Columbiana De Navegacion Aerea - Porte aereo $0.10" for the Columbia February 1920 Airmail
issue (C2, C4-C10) missing the extremely rare label used to produce Scott #C3 (believed one or two may exist); all bright and fresh, Very Fine and choice. Estimate; $4,000 - 6,000.
A REMARKABLE AND EXTREMELY RARE SET OF THE
CURTISS AEROPLANE CO. PROMOTIONAL LABELS WHICH WHERE USED TO PRODUCED THE EVER POPULAR COLUMBIA FEBRUARY 1920 AIRMAIL ISSUE.
The Curtiss Aeroplane Co. had a series of 20 labels produced to be inserted into cigarette packs for advertising
purposes. Under contract with the Colombian Government, the Compania Colombiana de Navegacion Aerea (SCADTA) arranged to have nine of the labels overprinted for use as Air Post stamps. The designs of the other 10 were deemed inconvenient for
overprinting or just not appropriate for use. In all, it is believed the Colombian Government purchased 100 sets and is speculated that one or two of the labels used to produce Scott #C3 were not overprinted.
