1426     UX8 imageHawaii, Postal Card, 1894, 1¢ red on buff. Japanese New Year Greeting 1898 printed message on reverse of 1¢ red on buff showing black and red crossed Japanese Flags, from Unosuke Kobayashi, a Japanese businessman from Jigozen mura in Hiroshima prefecture, he established the Kobayashi Hotel on Beretania Street after his first hotel burned down in the Chinatown fire, card sent to Kohala with "Honolulu, H.I., Jan 4, 1898" duplex postmark canceling and neatly written message on front, Extremely Fine, an extremely rare printed message with only two other examples of this card being recorded.

Tied by purple "Stamp Duty, Paid, Nov 15, 1881" handstamp on Royal Patent granting 256 fathoms of land at Palikea, Oahu including three land plot sketches, signed by King Kalakaua and countersinged by Minister of Interior H. Carter, with green embossed royal seal; file fold affecting bottom stamp, still Very Fine, a rare Royal Patent document signed by King Kalakaua awarded to the Kahili.

A kahili is a symbol of the ali'i chiefs and families of the Hawaiian Islands. It was taken by the Kamehamehas as a Hawaiian royal standard and used by the Royal Families to indicate their lineage.
