Hawaii, 1860, 3¢ green, Clark die essay. On 25 x 31mm card, large even margins, Very Fine.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

Late in 1860, Hawaii's Postmaster General, Alva K. Clark, wrote to John S. Marsh of Boston, asking him to find out what it would cost to have a supply of 1¢, 2¢ and 3¢ stamps, and struck off trial colors, which Mr. Marsh probably sent out to the Islands. In late March 1861, Mr. Clark canceled the order and the stamps apparently never got beyond the die proof stage. (Image1)

Eldridge from Honolulu Nov. 23rd to San Francisco arriving Dec. 7th, "San Francisco Cal. Dec 7, 1864" receiving cds duplexed with cogwheel cancel, bold "SHIP 6" straightline for ship rate to port of arrival, reverse with partial "San Francisco Cal., Advertised, Dec 14" cds circular datestamp; stamp with two tiny tears, cover cleaned and repaired with back reattached, Fine appearance, ex-Honolulu Advertiser, Twigg-Smith, with 2007 P.F. certificate.

A RARE SINGLE-USE OF THE 1863 2¢ KAMEHAMEHA IV ISSUE ON A COLLECT COVER TO SAN FRANCISCO.

This is a rather unusual use of the 2¢ Kamehameha IV issue as inter-island mail was free until 1864 and the Hawaiian postage for a foreign letter was 5¢ (perhaps difference 3¢ paid in cash). In addition, we can only speculate what the "M.P.P.O." abbreviation refers to, as we are not aware of a corresponding "M.P." Post Office on the Islands. (Image1)
