ca 1855 Perkins Bacon engraved essay in black by Humphreys of QV Chalon design in Coronation Robes, 32mm in diameter with superb engine turned frame, on thin glossy CHALK-SURFACED CARD 75x50mm, with the sunken rectangular blank areas of the die still weakly printed in grey. (The head identical to issued design, but diff engine turned background is horiz, rather than radiating from a circle in the issued stamp. Interestingly this exact circular design but in smaller format was used as part of the design on Union Bank banknotes). Niice item for title page frontispiece of a Chalon collection or exhibit. 1855-57 QV Chalon 1/- pale yellow-green on blued paper, wmk star, imperf. Perkins Bacon London printing, with part barred oval 'CANCELLED' h/s. (This being one of the so called "Ormond Hill Specimens" when in 1861 Perkins Bacon supplied 6 examples of many of their current & earlier issues to Rowland Hill's son in law. Despite the fact that all these stamps were obliterated with the "CANCELLED" h/s, the Agent-General for the Crown Colonies vehemently objected, and this led directly to Perkins Bacon losing their stamp printing contracts to Thomas De La Rue). 1858 QV Chalon 1/- green on blue paper, no wmk, imperf, Richardson Auckland printing, vertical BISECT (right half) tied on cover by barred oval '18' pmk to pay 6d rate to Ireland, b/s 'Otago DE 27 1858' & 'Dublin AP 1 1859' arrival cds. (At the time no 6d stamps had yet issued, and such bisects paying the 6d rate were a provisional usage by the postmaster in order not to use up too fast the lower denomination stamps as multiple frankings).
