R. Maresch & Son is pleased to have been selected to be the auctioneer for the Fred Fawn award- winning Large Queen exhibit. Mr. Fawn, as I grew up calling him even though he was personable, had been visiting and buying from our retail store and our auction sales since the 1970s. He had collected and exhibited many different things over the years including the Canada's Imperial Penny Postage 1898 and Marx & Engels First Time on Stamps in the world (1919) just to name a few but specialized and exhibited the Large Queens 1868 to 1972 for many years, and throughout supported by Eve, his wife of 58 years. In addition to careful collecting, Fred Fawn engaged in extensive research, including on historical design, colour and production innovations, and on tracking down details on intriguing accounts of the uses and travels of particular covers. Several of his exhibitions were reproduced for the National Archives. Fred Fawn’s collection had been exhibited all over the world, winning many awards, including F.I.P. GOLD at CHINA 1999, AUSTRALIA PACIFIC EXPLORER 2005, ESPAGNA 2006, BELGICA 2006, PRAGA 2008, ITALIA 2009, BRASILIA 2017, ISRAEL 2018, CHINA 2019, as well as CHICAGOPEX WSP 2004, AMERISTAMP and 2007 Court of Honor ROYAL 2007. The exhibit showed Essays, Die Proofs, Trial Colour Proof, Plate Proofs, mint, used, varieties, covers with different rates, including mixed frankings, both Cents and Small Queens, Registered and Foreign destinations. It includes many unique, “only recorded”, “largest know” items. Going through the exhibit we recognized many items that were sold thought us in past auctions from other great collectors and customers, such as Arfken, Brassler, Brigham, deVolpi, Firth, Gordon, Greene, Harrison, Leggett, Lindsey, Lum, Menich, Pratt, and Siverts just to name a few. We are also pleased to once again be the Official auctioneer for CAPEX 22 continuing in a tradition my father started in 1978. I would also like to thank the many people who assisted us in the preparation of this sale, Rick Sheryer who gracefully came out of retirement to help, Glenn Archer, Ted Nixon and the Vincent Graves Greene Foundation.
